Pacquiao vs Margarito | Pacquiao Fight Updates

So lets jump to spring of 2010. Mayweather has beat Juan Manuel Marquez and Pacquiao has beat Miguel Cotto. These could be two highly competitive fights. But , for the sake of argument and my article , Mayweather and Pacquiao come out winners. How does the fight shape up? You have two extremely skilled boxers. Both are quick. We have the former and present pound for pound kings facing off. Different styles , different personas and very different trainers. What happens on fight night?

The closest thing Mayweather has faced to an opponent that resembles Pacquiao is a combination of Zab Judah and Jose Luis Castillo. A concoction of Erik Morales and Juan Manuel Marquez is what we need to create a suitable , if thats possible , Mayweather clone.

The counter punching of Marquez gave Pacman trouble. Manny was leary of jumping on Marquez and when he hesitated he lost the round. Morales did basically the same thing. Erik's philosophy was to take ten punches to land two punches.

Mayweather had trouble with Judah. At least for the first four rounds. Judah used his speed to give Mayweather angles. It was effective until Judah had his usual meltdown. His loss of focus turned a good fight into an easy Mayweather victory.

Many thought that Castillo beat Mayweather in their first fight. He did this with constant pressure. Mayweather likes to be on the ropes and look for openings as his opponent commits to his punches. Castillo took this advantage away by staying close and throwing an assortment of punches.

Roach said De La Hoya won every round against Mayweather when he used his jab. This kept the defensive minded Mayweather in an even more defensive posture. But Mayweather is smart and has a habit of figuring out opponents.

So what happens? Pacquiao's aura of invincibility shows in the first round. He starts strong and immediately attacks Mayweather. Mayweather grins , but you can tell he isn't comfortable. Mayweather's quickness allows him to roll with and away from some punches. Still , Mayweather cannot land any telling blows as Pacquiao's speed is amazing.

Round two also goes to Pacquiao. But , you can see Mayweather becoming a little more offensive minded.

The two split rounds three to six. Pacquiao raises his hands after the two exchange. He is in his element. Whenever there is a lull Mayweather grabs the opportunity to potshot his opponent.

Rounds seven through ten see more of the same. The difference is that Mayweather continues to head hunt while Pacquiao has focused on Mayweather's body. Pacquiao seems to be ahead six rounds to four. Some may even see him ahead seven to three.

Rounds eleven and twelve are usually Floyd's rounds , but the bodyshots have definitely taken their toll. Knowing he probably needs a knockout doesn't matter. Mayweather believes he is ahead and goes defensive again. Round twelve sees Mayweather back on the ropes. He appears hurt from the body attack. Manny attacks like a hungry lion and tries to stop his prey , but Mayweather survives the round.

Manny Pacquiao is announced as the clear cut winner. Manny says the jab and body punching were the key to his victory. The only one in disbelief is Floyd Mayweather. He sprouts off about boxing politics and Larry Merchant ends the interview by saying , "Floyd , you finally lost , get over it".

Over the past several months I have made two predictions regarding Manny Pacquiao (49-3-2, 37 KOs); one was that he would beat Oscar De La Hoya (39-6, 30 KOs) and the other was that he would take care of business with Ricky Hatton (45-2, 32 KOs). As Pacquiao looks toward his next bout in November against Miguel Cotto (34-1, 27 KOs), I will make another prediction; this one not in the favor of the beloved Pacman.

FILIPINO’S LUCK & RUN COMING TO END

Being a fan of both fighters isn’t an issue for me in making this pick. My feelings towards fighters rarely interfere with the objective nature of journalism. However, I will tell you this; Manny Pacquiao will lose to Miguel Cotto. This time, Manny and his team have simply bitten off more than they can chew. I am very, very happy to see Manny and his trainer Freddie Roach finally get their props, but I don’t think there is any game plan that they can come up with against Cotto that will have an end result in their favor.

BE HONEST, OSCAR WAS MORE SHOT THAN TUPAC!

When De La Hoya fought Steve Forbes (34-7, 10 KOs), I could tell he wasn’t who he once was, and when the Pac fight was signed I knew he wouldn’t be able to keep the little Filipino off of him. When Pac signed to face the overrated Ricky Hatton, I knew he would stop him as Hatton doesn’t even know how to spell defense, let alone show it in the ring. But with Cotto, it will be too much. Cotto isn’t just a big name, he isn’t just an icon in Puerto Rico, and he isn’t just a legitimate welterweight with legitimate boxing skills and solid power. He is however all of this and more, and on top of that, he won’t come charging in like a drunk Mancunian and at the set catch weight of 145 lbs, he won’t come in completely drained.

IT’LL BE COTTO’S NOVEMBER TO REMEMBER

Even if Cotto has lost a step since getting hit with bricks last year (Antonio Margarito), he still has more than enough left to take care of Pacquiao. He was able to deal with Shane Mosley’s (46-5, 39 KOs) blinding speed, and he will make the necessary adjustments to deal with Pac’s speed. If Cotto comes in injury free and doesn’t have difficulty making weight, this will be a vicious one sided affair in favor of the Puerto Rican. I love Manny Pacquiao not only for what he has done for the sport, but also for the generous, kind person that he is, but in this fight, I can’t see him having much of a shot.

TEN REASONS COTTO WILL BEAT PACQUIAO

10.) Speed- Even though this asset goes to Pacquiao, Cotto will know how use it in his benefit and counter; making it to his advantage; not the Pacman’s.

9.) Power- Pacman has tons of pop, but Cotto still has the advantage here, especially given his size advantage and body attack.

8.) Punch Selection- Cotto knows what to throw and when to throw it.

7. ) Size- No explanation needed here, Cotto is much bigger!

6.) Boxing Skills- As much as Manny has improved, he still isn’t as technically sound as the Puerto Rican.

5.) Defense- Cotto has very good and probably under rated defense. He will be able to parry Pac’s straight left hand with ease.

4.) Experience- Both men have significant ring experience, but I think Cotto’s will better suit him for this fight; mainly because of his fight against Shane Mosley.

3.) Respect- Cotto will show respect for Manny’s power instead of simply running in like an amateur a la Hatton.

2.) Will- Both men have great heart, grit and will, but Cotto has had to show it more often, and has no problem doing so.

AND THE #1 REASON WHY COTTO WILL BEAT PAC

1.) Ring IQ- Cotto simply understands the game slightly better; giving him the knowledge and know how to beat Pac.

MANILA, Philippines - Freddie Roach has started doing his homework in anticipation of a big match between Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto on Nov. 14 in Las Vegas.

The three-time Trainer of the Year told the Philippine radio program Sports Chat that Cotto, the WBO welterweight champion, is no pushover as others would think.

“He is a very strong fighter and puncher. We have to pay attention to that. That is my biggest worry,” he said of Cotto, who’s younger, taller and heavier.

Roach, the hottest trainer in the sport today, is not wasting time.

“We have to come up with a game plan to defeat this guy. I studied his fights last night. I’m going to see his previous fights and see if we could pick up some habits that we can take advantage of.”

Negotiations for the fight are on, and Top Rank’s Bob Arum, who handles both boxers, said it’s close to being sealed. He said it should be done next week.

Roach feels it’s just a matter of time before the fight is formalized, whether it’s held at 145 lb or less, and whether Pacquiao gets 65 percent or everything or more.

Pacquiao, at 30 two years older, should concentrate on the body if he wants to chop down Cotto early. Nacho Beristain, the Mexican trainer, believes that Cotto may go down in six rounds.

“Manny should take advantage of the body. He’s not strong to the body. He has a pretty good chin. He can take punches in the head. But I think we have to break him down in the earlier rounds and work at the body a lot,” said Roach.

Pacquiao was at ringside when Cotto survived Josh Clottey a few weeks ago at the Madison Square Garden, and he probably liked what he saw – a beatable 147 lb champion.

“I think it is a hard fight for us. But I think it is a winnable fight. I think Manny can now box him,” Roach said.

“Whether it is 143, 144 or 145 pounds, it does not matter. I have no problem with 145 pounds. Cotto is a welterweight champion of the world. When we fought Oscar (Dela Hoya) at 147, he was not a world champion. Miguel would be the toughest fight to date at least on paper.”

Another concern for Roach is what people might say after Pacquiao, who has won his last four fights in different weight classes, beats the Puerto Rican champ.

He said Dela Hoya was favored to win against Pacquiao but when the American legend lost in eight rounds people came up with excuses.

“They say he (Dela Hoya) is going to kill Manny. After the fight, they say he is old. After we beat Cotto, what are they going to say?,” Roach told Sports Chat.

“They all want a taste of the money,” Arum told the Bulletin early this week when asked about why the likes of Shane Mosley and even his promoter Oscar De La Hoya have been making noise – and almost on their bended knees – appealing that a fight between Pacquiao and Mosley be staged instead of the one that is close to being done.

Pacquiao stands to earn much more than what he got from fighting De La Hoya and Ricky Hatton when he tangles with Cotto.

Being the undisputed face of boxing, Pacquiao is a certified box-office and pay-per-view star and this is the main reason why Mosley, Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Juan Manuel Marquez have been itching to be rewarded with a date with a Pacquiao fight, noted Arum, who inked Pacquiao to a lucrative contract in late-2006 following the Filipino’s twin demolition job on erstwhile Top Rank top talent Erik Morales.

Meanwhile, Pacquiao will get to see the content of Arum’s proposal for a Cotto fight when Canadian Mike Koncz arrives in Manila on Tuesday.

Koncz is one of Pacquiao’s advisers and he told this paper yesterday in an overseas call that the proposal is “reasonable” but it would be all up to Pacquiao to decide whether to accept it or not.

“I don’t want to negotiate in the media. What I’ll do is present this to Manny then we’ll see what happens next,” said Koncz, who met with Arum last weekend in Las Vegas.

Shane Mosley continues to justify himself as the best fighter to land a fight with Manny Pacquiao. In a recent interview with Sports Chat, Mosley talks about his worldwide fan base, his track record as a fighter and his quest to be the best.

"Bob Arum is offering Pacquiao $12 -13 million, I think Pacquiao's going to make $20 million fighting me. I'm confident he'll make more money with me than fighting Cotto. That fight (Miguel vs. Manny) is only big if they are fighting in New York" said Mosley, who thinks Cotto is not the same top calibre fighter he once was after his loss to Margarito.

"It is not just the Filipinos versus Puerto Ricans. It is a world wide fight. Manny Pacquiao is worldwide now.He is not just confined to Philippines and Puerto Ricans. And that is what I bring to the table. I bring world wide recognition. I have Filipino fans. I have Puerto Rican fans, I have American fans. I have fans around the world. I have been fighting for 15 years. I have been champion for a long time. I just don't come out of the blue. "added Mosley, who has been in the fight scene longer than the Puerto Rican Star.

"I believe Richard Schaefer talks to Bob Arum all the time. He tells him to make this fight. But Arum just cancels him out and says he's going to make the Cotto fight. One of the best trainers in the sport, Ignacio "Nacho" Beristain, said Manny Pacquiao will stop Miguel Cotto within six rounds. The Cotto-Pacquiao bout is being lined up for November 14 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, with the catch-weight of 145-pounds being likely. Beristain trained Juan Manuel Marquez for both bouts with Pacquiao, and trained Oscar De La Hoya for last year's career-ending loss to Pacquiao.

Beristain says Cotto has not looked the same since last July's knockout loss to Antonio Margarito. He said Cotto was not himself in the recent fight with Joshua Clottey, where Cotto won a close split decision.

"Cotto remained a little deteriorated after the fight that he had with Antonio Margarito and to be up against Manny Pacquiao, with all due respect - since I respect and I admire Puerto Rican boxing, but I believe that Pacquiao should put him on the canvas in five or six rounds," Beristain told Primera Hora.

He said Cotto may have made too many changes, and combined with the beating from Margarito, could be a dangerous combination for the fight ahead.

"In the fight against Clottey, you could see some of the aftermath of what happened with Margarito. Clotty is not a top-level fighter and nevertheless, in some moments Cotto was put in predicaments and the punches were affecting him," Beristain said.

"Before he was a fighter with good technique, fast and well cared for, but he doesn't seem like himself. He changed his coach, changed some of his habits and catches more punches. I do not believe that it would very advisable to take a fight like this after changing his main trainer. A fight with Pacquiao is serious thing. You have to be well prepared. The fight with Pacquiao can be dangerous."

Miguel Cotto is an excellent young fighter. He has great skills, and he has perhaps the best left hook to the body in the business. He is very deserving of fighting anybody, and he is a top 10 pound for pound fighter. With all of that said, he is not Sugar Shane Mosley. Yes he beat him in 2007, close fight that I will discuss in a bit. But in totality he is not yet even close to Shane in accomplishments and achievment. Beating the man, does not make you the man. Jermain Taylor beat Bernard Hopkins twice, but does anybody really think he is as good as Bernard Hopkins. Iran Barkley knocked out Thomas Hearns, but does anybody rational really believe Barkley was a better fighter. No I am not part of the Shane Mosley PR team. In fact, I think Manny Pacquiao beats both him and Cotto, but Mosley is leaps and bounds above Cotto. I know this has been a recurring theme of some of my other stories. But I still can’t believe people are justifying Cotto as a better opponent for Pacquiao instead of Mosley.

History

Miguel Cotto was a good Jr. Welterweight fighter. He beat some solid fighters and won a title belt. But he was in life and death struggles with above average fighters like Ricardo Torres and Demarcus Corley. And he failed to knock out Paul Malignaggi, in a fight of which he lost 3 or 4 rounds. He moved up to Welterweight and scored a spectacular win over Carlos Quintana to win the WBA crown. He would go on to beat Zab Judah in a great fight in 2007. He proceed to beat Mosley in a fight I will discuss in a bit. Then he would lose brutally to Margarito.

Shane Mosley on the the other hand was a destructive lightweight. He defended his title 8 times and probably it would be hard to find a round he actually lost in those 8 defenses. He was the 2nd best lightweight since Roberto Duran. (Pernell Whitaker was better) If anybody questions how good he was pop in the tape of his fight against John John Molina in 1998. It was brilliant. He earned the 1998 BWAA fighter of the year award. He proceeded to jump 2 divisions and beat a prime Oscar De La Hoya. He defended his title 3 times. He was considered at that time by most, to be the best fighter in the world pound for pound. 38-0-35 knockouts.

Vernon Forrest put an end to the Sugar Ray Robinson comparisions with a devastating win in early 2002. He repeated the win in a much closer fight later that year. Mosley would go on to beat De La Hoya again in 2003, controversially(Balco and Scorecards)
He lost to Winky Wright 2 times in 2004, 2nd fight closer then the 1st. Then he would go on a roll with great wins over Fernando Vargas, Luis Collazo, and recently Antonio Margarito, to win the WBA and World(Cyberboxingzone.com) Welterweight Crown.

Just by looking at this. Cotto would have to beat Pacquiao convincingly and win the legitimate title at Jr. Middleweight to equal Mosley. Could it happen? Yes. Will it. I have my doubts.

2007 Fight

First off let me say, I have no problem with the decision. Cotto fought great against Mosley, and anytime there is a close fight, nobody should have a problem with the decision.

But looking back at the fight. It was basically an even fight. Just as many people scored the fight a draw as they did score Cotto the winner, some even had Mosley up in the cards. The Associated Press had it 114-114. They both landed 248 punches. Cotto landed more jabs and boxed better, but Mosley landed more power punches and was stronger down the stretch. It was a very close fight.

Rewatching the fight there are 4 acceptable cards. 116-112 Cotto, 115-113 Cotto, 114-114, and 115-113 Mosley. It depends on what you were watching for. Some like Cotto’s excellent jab that night, some like Mosley effective agressiveness. Personally I had it a draw, but like I said I had no problem with the decision, and nobody should.

But the point here is just because you beat somebody closely and not clearly, it doesn’t make you better then that fighter. My example is Jermain Taylor beating Bernard Hopkins twice. Both of those fights were close, a lot of people had Hopkins winning. But does anybody really feel that Taylor was a better fighter. In my opinion Cotto is a better fighter then Taylor, but Cotto’s win over Mosley was far from decisive. There should have been a rematch to clear it up, but Cotto’s people did not want it.(Cotto would fight anybody, so nobody is blaming him)

Also not one legitimate ranking organization has Cotto ranked above Mosley currently. Everybody has Mosley the number 1 welterweight in the world and higher on the Pound for Pound list then Cotto.

Margarito

Antonio Margarito is the most polarizing fighter in boxing right now. He has even earned the name “Margacheato” for his attempt to load his glove against Shane Mosley earlier this year. Last year, Margarito knocked out and beat up Miguel Cotto in a fight now that has a shadow over it. But for every body who wants to say Cotto is still undefeated, he is not. Margarito style and activity will always give Cotto problems. And while we have our suspicions. We don’t have any evidence to prove it. (I think he did load his gloves)

Now back to Mosley. If anybody watched that fight in January they know that Margarito could have had brinks in his gloves that night and it would not have mattered. Shane Mosley flat out destroyed him. He knocked him out in spectacular fashion. You can’t load your chin, and Shane Mosley laid a whooping. Paul Williams, Joshua Clottey, and Miguel Cotto all landed their best shots, but none made the dent Mosley did. It reminds me of Kelly Pavlik beating Jermain Taylor, who beat Bernard Hopkins. Hopkins proceeded to dominate and humilate Pavlik, much like Mosley did to Margarito.

Closing

In closing, nothing is going to change the fact the Shane Mosley is a better fighter historically then Miguel Cotto as of right now. Mosley beat better fighters, he has accomplished more, and every reputable person who can see believes he is higher ranked then Cotto, even right now at 37 years old. (a rematch could change that but it never happened.)

For the Cotto fans, this is not a slight at your fighter. He is an excellent fighter. But he has a long way to go. Yes, he beat Mosley in 2007, but in the end it was a close and undecisive win that deserved a rematch.

Can Cotto beat Manny Pacquiao? No, I don’t think he can. But I don’t think Shane Mosley can either. But my point is Mosley is more deserving of the fight with Manny Pacquiao and it is not even close. Sorry Cotto fans, its the truth. Mosley is just better right now.

Negotiations for a Nov. 14 megafight between Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto remain on track, according to the promoter for both fighters who said the Puerto Rican's team is ready to proceed and make it official.

"We're pretty well there," says Bob Arum, chairman of Top Rank, Inc., who talked with Cotto's representatives Tuesday morning. "I'll get it done next week. That's my goal."

Arum met with a representative from Pacquiao's camp over the weekend to outline the deal. Pacquiao still has to review it.

"We decided we didn't want to call Manny to discuss it on the phone because Manny tends to be distracted (in the Philippines)," says Arum, who was able to get Pacquiao to agree via phone to set up his May 2 junior welterweight championship bout with Ricky Hatton. Pacquiao (49-3-2, 37 KOs) won by second-round knockout in the first major pay-per-view bout of the year in his first appearance at 140 pounds.

Although Cotto holds a major welterweight belt and is one of the division's top two fighters with a claim to the actual throne along with Shane Mosley, the fight will take place slightly below the 147-pound limit. Though initially it appeared to be a major stumbling block — Cotto (33-1, 27 KOs) had said he wouldn't come down in weight before his close decision win vs. Joshua Clottey on June 13 — it isn't any more.

"The weight is still in the air," Arum says. "But we're still in the same ballpark. It's not a big issue, really. Miguel is not going down below 144. Manny wants him to be a couple pounds below 147. That's not going to stop the deal from being made."

The bout would take place at MGM Grand Garden Arena on pay-per-view.

Top Rank Promotions chief Bob Arum thinks it’s much more practical for Manny Pacquiao to pick Miguel Cotto over Shane Mosley.

And here is why.

“Manny Pacquiao has saw for himself how immensely popular Miguel Cotto is,” said Arum in an interview over dzSR’s Sports Chat with Dennis Principe.

“Miguel has always done extremely well on pay per view… Cotto brings more to the table than Mosley,” he added.

Arum said that just like Filipinos, there are many Puerto Ricans in the US, all of whom will be rooting for their champion.

This, he said, is Cotto’s edge over Mosley.

“Miguel brings millions of Puerto Rican fans... those people will be coming for the fight and buy pay per view,” said Arum, who promoted some of boxing’s most historical matches.

Arum added that Cotto is more likely to agree to a smaller split compared to Mosley, who has offered a 40-60 revenue share favoring Pacquiao just to get the Filipino to fight him.

“Cotto has a smaller split than Mosley and Manny can just fight one fighter at a time. Down the road to next year there can always be a Mosley and [Floyd] Mayweather Jr.,” said the Top Rank chief.

Mosley earlier accused Arum of blocking his way to prevent Pacquiao from fighting him.

“Bob Arum is being the puppet master putting this together, but Manny will make more money fighting me,” said Mosley.

MANILA, Philippines – Manny Pacquiao’s camp may already be in negotiation for a prospective fight with Miguel Cotto but Sugar Shane Mosley is not about to throw in the towel yet.

Still dead serious in getting the Filipino ring icon as opponent, Mosley reiterated that he, not Cotto, presents the BIG fight out there for the reigning pound-for-pound king.

"The only person that's stopping the (Pacquiao-Mosley) fight is Bob Arum (Top Rank boss who promotes both Pacquiao and Cotto)," Mosley was quoted in a fighthype.com report.

Mosley, who had even declared his willingness to accept a 40/60 split and slide down from 147 lbs to meet Pacquiao at a catch weight, claimed Arum was only pushing for a Pacquiao-Cotto bout in a bid to keep the Puerto Rican at his stable.

“Bob Arum has his own investments into the fight as far as him wanting to re-sign Cotto and get him a big fight. Then he has Pacquiao. He will give Cotto a little money to keep him happy because he really doesn't deserve any of it. And then he will throw Pacquiao something out there.

“But the bigger fight is me and Pacquiao. We have the biggest names by far and Pacquiao's legacy wouldn't be damaged losing to me. I don't understand…well, I do understand what Bob Arum wants to do, but I wouldn't understand why Pacquiao wouldn't take the fight," he said.

Pacquiao had given Arum the greenlight to initiate talks with WBO welterweight champ Cotto after watching the latter fight and escape with a split decision win over Joshua Clottey.

The projected Pacquiao-Cotto duel is being eyed for November 14 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

The wheels are already in motion and Arum had expressed confidence both fighters would sign on, although he’s not rushing things.

"What's the rush?" Arum told the Las Vegas Review-Journal Sunday. "There's going to be some haggling, like there always is. But, eventually, we'll get it worked out, and by early July, everything should be set for what will be a great fight."

But Mosley, the reigning WBA welterweight champion, insisted the fight that fans really want involves him and the IBO 140-lb boss.

And he’s willing to put this on a vote among Pacquiao’s Filipino fans.

"I just want to tell Pacquiao to do the right thing for boxing," Mosley said in the fighthype.com report. “I think you guys should put a poll up and let the Philippine fans vote which one they think would be a bigger fight and who they want to see Pacquiao fight next, Shane Mosley or Miguel Cotto! Let's see who the Philippine fans want Pacquiao to fight next,"

But apparently, it’s not the Filipinos’ vote on his next foe that Pacquiao is interested in right now.

Over the weekend, Pacquiao joined the townsfolk of Malapatan, Saranggani in celebrating their founding anniversary, a move seen as his initial salvo in trying to woo their votes next year. The 30-year-old Pacquiao is bent on running for a congressional seat in Saranggani after a failed bid in South Cotabato three years ago.

Freddie Roach may hold the key to the Pacquiao-Mosley match as he insists that Manny Pacquiao will not go more than 143 pounds to face Miguel Cotto who said that he can only go down to 145.
Freddie Roach can make or break a fight. In fact he can break the Pacquiao-Cotto fight which promoter Bob Arum has been salivating since the day Pacquiao won over Oscar de la Hoya.

Earlier Arum announced that the Pacquiao-Cotto match is all set for November 14, 2009 at the Madison Square Garden. There seems to be two major issues that need to be resolved and these are the weight and the fight purse, otherwise it is a done deal.

Cotto’s contract with Arum’s Top Rank was reported to be expiring shortly and a way to keep him under his promotional outfit is to give him a crack at the pound-for-pound king. Arum was scheduled to meet with Pacquiao’s adviser Michael Koncz Sunday to discuss Cotto’s proposal. Koncz will then confer with the pound-for-pound klng and then get the inputs from team Pacquiao.

Expectedly, Pacquiao will refer the proposal to his trainer Freddie Roach who seems to have the final say on the weight issue. Roach has been saying all along that Pacquiao can only go as high as 143. With this condition, Cotto must overrule his nutritionist to make the fight happen as the Cotto camp is dead set on 145.

It was reported earlier that Cotto cannot go down to 143 as it will ‘kill’ his body. If Roach insist on his original offer of 143, there will be no Pacquiao-Cotto match unless the camp of Cotto agrees to Freddie’s demand. Roach is a big influence on his fighter and most probably Pacquiao will respect his decision.

In the meantime Mosley, in a report by Philstar com said:

“I’m frustrated by the situation, that Bob Arum’s just trying to put more money in his pocket,” Mosley told Lance Pugmire of The LA Times yesterday. “If he wants the fight that’s going to make the most money for Pacquiao, then that’s a fight against me.”

Mosley has not given up on his quest to face Pacquiao for a mega match. He has stated that he can take a 60-40 purse sharing and made tempting offers to lure the pound for pound king to face him late this year.

WBA welterweight titleholder Shane Mosley was interviewed by Julius Stecker of PhilBoxing.com, and "Sugar" was hardly polite or reserved when discussing the imminent fight between Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto.

The fight does not make any sense to me. A fight with me will make more money. I know there have been numbers going on out there like Cotto making 5 or 6 million and Manny making 10,11 or 12. Even if you look at Cotto’s gash, do you think it will heal in time? It might just open up again if he fights Pacquiao. The fans need to know that the best and biggest fight in boxing right now is with me.

There is a part of me that knows this is most likely just a tactic, Shane throwing all his cards on the table and trying to talk his way into a fight with Pacquiao, but there is also part of this that should be discussed as if Shane is just full of it.

1. Mosley is not the welterweight champion. He and Cotto are both titleholders, really no different from one another other than Mosley earned his by beating a better fighter (even with Plastergate, Margarito is a damn sight better than Michael Jennings).
2. Mosley is not as big a star as Cotto is. This is a sad fact, perhaps, because Sugar Shane has earned a legion of supporters, but they've just never been there. Cotto has the rabid and loyal Puerto Rican fanbase in his corner. Mosley does not have anything close to that.
3. That said, it is highly unlikely there is more money in a Pacquiao-Mosley fight than there is Pacquiao-Cotto. Cotto brings more fans, which means a likely higher buyrate. Either fight would sell out in Vegas, largely due to the presence of Pacquiao.
4. Yeah, Cotto almost lost to Joshua Clottey. But he didn't.
5. Cotto beat Mosley in 2007 in a close, epic fight that had great action, real drama, and was one of the best fights of that year. But nobody thinks Mosley won that fight.

All that aside, Mosley just really wants this fight, and you cannot blame him for that. Shane has made a career of fighting top opponents. When no one on earth would TOUCH a fight with Winky Wright, Mosley fought him. He lost and fought him again, and lost again. Three men have been able to beat Mosley: Wright (twice), Vernon Forrest (twice) and Cotto.

It's not like Miguel Cotto is some bum. Taking Plastergate into account now, Cotto's only loss is treated with skepticism at this point. Cotto beat Mosley. Cotto fought Margarito, fought Clottey, fought a then-unbeaten Carlos Quintana -- he's another guy that fights the best fighters he can. And you can make a good argument that Mosley and Cotto are really 1A and 1B in the welterweight rankings.

Mosley accuses Arum of lying to the public with this fight, and says that Pacquiao-Mosley is "much bigger" than Pacquiao-Cotto. When the years pass, it may well have turned out that that would have been the case. As far as all-time standing goes, Mosley is miles ahead of Cotto for the time being. But Cotto is in his prime. Mosley is nearing 40.

It's a toss-up in terms of promising action, being a great fight, being a desirable fight, etc., so it comes down to business. And Shane and everyone else at Golden Boy understand that Bob Arum makes more money with Pacquiao-Cotto. If those same Golden Boy folks think the public doesn't get that, they're mistaken. We get it.

No one is saying Pacquiao-Mosley wouldn't be a great fight. But why pretend Pacquiao-Cotto won't be a great fight? Saying these things won't make Pacquiao-Mosley happen. Unless Cotto breaks his legs jogging up and down stairs or something, it's simply not a possibility for this year.

Mosley also notes, as he likes to do, that he loves his job. Well, then fight. He knows for a fact that the Pacquiao sweepstakes are over. Clottey's out there. Berto's out there. Williams is out there. Right now, all he's doing is spending precious time slamming another fight, and in turn not fighting.

Final note: Bob Arum has said that the Pacquiao-Cotto weight will be 144 or 145 pounds.

I just can’t see how a guy who barely won, and a lot of people think he lost. I am one of them. Who gets a chance to fight Manny Pacquiao. I earned this fight.

Now back to this money thing. You are telling me that Manny Pacquiao will make more money fighting you, how so?

Mosley: It is a bigger fight. So there is more money out there. I am more well known then Miguel Cotto. You saw all the celebrities at my last fight. Yes there were a lot of fans out were there to see Margarito, but the celebrities were there to see me, because I am a legendary fighter. I shocked the world that night….I have been on more pay per views.

What do you say to people who say you are fighting for the money. And that that is only reason why you want to fight Pacquiao.

Mosley: I don’t need the money. I have money. Yes the money is nice. But I want to fight the biggest fights for the fans. The legacy fights. When I started fighting pro, I was fighting for $1,000, $2,000, but I didn’t care because I knew one day I would be world champion and my time would come. I love the sport, you can ask anybody. I love going to gym and sparring. I love what I do.

You spoke to Freddie Roach didn’t you about this fight possibly? Eloborate.

Mosley: Yes I talked to Freddie Roach before the Hatton fight. And he said he would rather have Pacquiao fight me because it is the best fight money wise and action wise. Manny would fight me at 147, but Freddie said I would have to come down a little. But he knows that fighting me is a much bigger fight then Cotto. There are 3 pound for pound champions, I used to be, Floyd(Mayweather Jr.) used to be. And Manny is now. I just want Bob Arum to stop lieing to Manny and the public. Manny Pacquiao versus me is a much bigger fight then Cotto.

Before Manny signs on the dotted line with Cotto, what would you say to him and his advisors?

Mosley: Do the right thing Manny. Fight the best fight for the fans, and the best fight for your legacy. You have nothing to lose by fighting me. There will be more prestige in fighting me then Cotto. I will enhance your legacy. Whatever Bob Arum money can offer you, I can offer more and then some.

Manny and me are the same. We will fight anybody. If he were to lose to me, I would give him a rematch. That is what I do, I am a fighter. I fought guys nobody would fight, Vernon Forrest, and Winky Wright. That is the same with Manny. You have every thing to gain by fighting me. It is a no lose situation.

In closing, what about a Thrilla in Manilla II? Would you fight him there?

Mosley: I would probably do something crazy like that. I would train in Big Bear though before I went. I don’t think I could train out there. The Philippines and the fans there are great and they love boxing.

Without a mark on him from his May 2 contest against Ricky Hatton, Pacquiao could have fought this summer, arguably in July or August.

Shane Mosley is a formidable opponent, but he was never really the right opponent. What would it have proved. Even before the discussions began, I always felt the skills of Pacquiao, if they are to be tested fully, would have been better measured against Miguel Cotto.

At welterweight, not light-welterweight, that is, though I understand the fight is being discussed as a catchweight contest. Pacquiao should go the whole hog and fight the Puerto Rican at 147lbs. He has it in him.

We are told by promoter Bob Arum that Nov 14 MGM Grand Garden Arena is on the cards; it could be the greatest defining moment yet for Pacquiao in his golden career. If he can defeat Cotto at welterweight, there can be no talk of victories over a potentially weight-drained Oscar De La Hoya, or a troubled Ricky Hatton.

Cotto makes no bones about it. He already believes it is “the greatest fight of my career”. Cotto knows that he will be properly tested by Pacquiao, and it promises to be one of the best fights this year, if it can be finalised.

There is also a nagging itch for another Pacquiao-Marquez fight. Over-egging it ? Not for a minute. They are both at their supreme best, and let’s see if Pacquiao can ‘box’ Marquez in a final, third, encounter…

There is a gathering school of thought that Pacquiao’s inclinations towards politics is a waste of time, and that now, in his prime as a fighter, he might consolidate his immense popularity within the thing he does best: out-thinking and out punching opponents in the ring, thrilling millions worldwide.

Roger Mayweather, the uncle and trainer of former pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr., thinks Miguel Cotto may pose problems to international superstar Manny Pacquiao because of his size.

“Cotto is a little too physical for him, too strong,” said Roger. “Pacquiao is smaller.”

Roger said that even if Pacquiao and Cotto agree to duel in a catch weight, the Puerto Rican may still come in bigger come fight night.

But he said a Pacquiao win will be good for his ward.

“If he wins, it’s better for me so he can fight my nephew,” said Roger.

The elder Mayweather said the former world champion is currently taking the much-needed rest after sustaining an injury in his right rib cage.

“There’s nothing you can do about it, it’s a fractured rib right now. He is resting and it should be a couple of months before he can go back,” said Roger.

Fight fans are eagerly waiting for a Pacquiao-Mayweather match up especially after the Filipino demolished Floyd’s erstwhile opponent Ricky Hatton in just two rounds.

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum, however, is pushing for a Pacquiao-Cotto match since a duel with Floyd could cause negotiation problems.

Floyd was supposed to fight Mexican champion Juan Manuel Marquez on July 18. The fight was postponed after “Pretty Boy” sustained the training injury.

New York, NY- Manny Pacquiao (49-3-2, 37 KOs) was ringside at Madison Square Garden for the Joshua Clottey vs. Miguel Cotto match Saturday night. Seated next to his promoter Bob Arum, who also promotes Cotto, this gave Manny a chance to size up his potential next opponent. As of right now, it appears that Pacquiao and Cotto will fight in the fall. This is due to the fact Floyd Mayweather has postponed his July 18th fight with Juan Manuel Marquez, claiming to a rib injury. Pacquiao sees something in Cotto that he believes he can exploit and he's not alone. I ran over this fight in my mind and I could find ten reasons why Cotto might not want to make his next fight against Pacquiao.

1. Speed: Miguel has decent speed, but he's not as fast as the fiery Filipino. Cotto will have a hard time dealing with several rounds of Pacquiao’s punches constantly coming at him in barrages. Undoubtedly, even if Cotto is able to block some of Pac's punches, others will get through and with his power, they can indeed cause serious damage.

2. Intensity: Cotto has had problems with determined and intense fighters. In his only loss, Cotto was stalked and walked down by Antonio Maragarito, who scored an 11th round TKO last July. If Cotto thinks that Margarito was intense, Pacquiao may redefine intensity altogether for him. With Pacquiao‘s added speed, it’s hard to image Cotto winning a whole fight going backwards.

3. Power: Pac has amazing power for someone who started off as a minimum weight (105 lbs) and now is knocking out welterweight (147 lb.) and junior welterweight (140 lb.) opponents at the sports highest level. Cotto has been down and hurt before in more than one fight, so in my opinion Pac would be very dangerous should he land in the proper spots. No one knows yet how Pac's punches may affect Cotto, but if/when the bell rings it will be too late to reconsider.

4. Momentum: Manny Pac in the eyes of most boxing experts is the best ‘pound for pound’ fighter in the world. Millions love him as legions of new fans are added to his movement every time he fights. He has the entire Philippines behind him and if you watched 24/7, stars like Mark Walberg, Mickey Rourke, and others were all on hand during his training sessions. It would be a pro Pac atmosphere leading up to the fight, something Cotto is surely not used to.

5. Durability Cotto has been in several tough wars. He was cut badly in two of his last four bouts. He's looked tired and beat in the later rounds although he still is aware what's going on. Pac is a lot fresher of a fighter at this point in his career and because of this, would make him less likely to fade than Cotto. Clottey looked like he had Cotto almost beat. It’s likely Pacquiao would have the tools to bring Cotto that much closer to the edge.

6. The Money: Right now Bob Arum seems to be leaning toward giving Pacquiao the lion share of the money for the fight. It has been reported as high as 70 percent. Pacquiao is the bigger star and he’s looking to cash in on his popularity while he can. Considering a 30% share of the fight, Cotto should not even take the fight. But on the other hand, it will be his biggest payday yet.

7. Weight: Although Cotto moved up from junior welterweight (140 lbs) to welterweight (147), he has not fought there in some time. Pac is going to try to bring him down to 142 to even out the weight difference and make Cotto less comfortable, if not drawn and unable to fight much like Oscar De La Hoya in the fight. This plan worked well against Oscar and I’m sure Pac’s trainer, Freddie Roach won’t mind.

8. Location: It's likely that this fight will not happen in New York, but rather in Las Vegas where bigger and better accommodations could me made for the numerous high profile guests that would attend. Cotto is used to fighting at his virtual home in New York and fighting in Las Vegas may be strange for him. Simply put, Miguel would have a spot on the biggest stage, but he wouldn't be the star.

9. Cotto’s Fight To Lose: Being that Cotto is the naturally bigger man a win would certainly not mean much for him as his opponent. If he beats Pac, he's defeated a smaller fighter, who although is magnificent still may be seen by the public to be too small for the naturally bigger Cotto. If he loses to Pac, Cotto will likely have a tough road to rebuild his career, particularly if he is knocked out. It would indeed make it two knockouts in his last four bouts and undoubtedly the curtains on his career would start to squeak and close.

10. Smarter Fights Out There: Cotto arguably hasn't lost a fight, considering the plaster of Paris ordeal with Antonio Margarito. He is tough and still marketable. With this being the case, he still has quite few options for opponents who would love the opportunity to fight him as well. He can focus on becoming the linear welterweight champ by going after WBC’s Andre Berto (25-0, 19 KOs). Or he can rematch with WBA champ Shane Mosley (46-5, 39 KOs), whom he has already beaten and would likely have a solid chance of repeating given he sticks to the original game plan.

In closing, I’m not saying that I don’t want this fight to happen, or that Cotto can’t win. It will be very exciting, even more so if Cotto can pull off the upset. It’s just that the odds are seriously against him and he might want to explore what else is out there before putting it all on the line in the fall.

After watching this past weekends fight between Miguel Cotto and Joshua Clottey, I thought 2 things. One was how much I admire Miguel Cotto as a fighter. He is tough, he has heart and he is skilled. But I was also thinking to myself, was that a hall of fame performance. Was that worthy to earn him a fight with Manny Pacquiao? Now Cotto may one day be Hall of Fame worthy, which I think he will eventually be. But he isn’t today. Pacquiao should be looking elsewhere for a challenge.

Manny Pacquiao is the best fighter of his generation; he has won titles in 6 divisions and has been a 4 division lineal champion. He only has few fights left. He should settle for nothing less then legacy fights. And while Cotto is an excellent fighter, he is not yet a legendary fighter. What Pacquiao needs is fights against legends. Anything less then Floyd Mayweather Jr, Sugar Shane Mosley or a 3rd match against Juan Manual Marquez would be unsatisfying. Let’s examine the prospects.

Floyd Mayweather Jr

Positives: This is the biggest monetary fight in boxing. It would be the former Pound for Pound vs the Current Pound for Pound. It is the biggest fight that could be made in boxing. And it would do well over 1 million buys in the PPV market. It is the sort of Mainstream fight that would draw in mainstream fans, which is what boxing needs.

Drawbacks: Mayweather style is hit and don’t get hit. Which will make for a non-fan friendly fight and could be difficult for Manny. The money factor would be an issue too, would Manny or Floyd take less money. I doubt it.

Sugar Shane Mosley

Postives: The best combination fight in boxing. Has the potential the be the whole package. A great fight, a mainstream draw, and a box office hit. It would be another match-up of a former pound for pound king vs the current pound for pound. Would be historic as well as Mosley is considered by most as the Welterweight Champion and a current top 5 pound for pound fighter. Manny could win his 7th title in this 7th Weight Class.

Drawbacks: Mosley will 38 when the fight would take place. Would he get old overnight? Does not sell tickets well when on his own.

Juan Manuel Marquez

Positives: A 3rd match between the 2. Would be a great fight on paper once again. Could become one of boxing’s great trilogy’s. Manny would not have move up in weight and both fighters are around the same size.

Drawbacks: Not a PPV blockbuster, has little US appeal. While a great fight it will be hard to sell to regular sports fans

Miguel Cotto

Positives: Good action fight. Most winnable fight on Paper for Pacquiao. Cotto has a title belt. Cotto while the bigger man, Pacquiao is the much faster fighter. Cotto is a good boxer evidenced by his close decisions over Mosley and Clottey. His defensive is not the best, and can be hit.

Drawbacks: Least accomplished of the other 3. Outside of New York and Puerto Rico is Cotto really a mainstream draw? This fight will do the least for Pacquiao’s legacy. Will there be huge build up with the US national media? No.

Verdict

There are 2 answers here. Mayweather is the best fight for the money. I think both men could clear 20 million a piece. It would be the biggest fight in the sport in since Julio Cesar Chavez-Pernell Whitaker. A forgettable fight with a horrendous decision. Do we really want to see that type of fight again?

The best fight if you want to include everything is Sugar Shane Mosley. It brings a legendary fighter, action fight, money, mainstream appeal, and legacy. Ask anybody honestly the question, what is the best fight to watch? Pacquiao-Mosley would be one for the ages. You just have to convince Bob Arum, Freddie Roach, and others to make the right fights. Anything less then Mayweather or Mosley is unacceptable.

Apparently a Pacquiao vs. Cotto clash for this fall became the frunt runner while Miguel Cotto was still engaged in combat with Joshua Clottey last Saturday night in New York. Manny Pacquiao’s presence loomed large at ringside for the bout and he sat next to Top Rank boss Bob Arum.

Reports are now circulating that Pacquiao was impressed with Cotto’s fan base at Madison Square Garden, and evidently he saw something he liked watching Cotto at work. Arum has stated Pacquiao asked him to make a fight between the two star fighters while they sat watching the action. With Floyd Mayweather Jr. injured this week, Pacquiao vs. Cotto is now the most logical option for all involved.

It is highly unlikely Mayweather would opt to return off nearly two years of inactivity straight into the lion’s den against Pacquiao. With the Mayweather option now seemingly out of the equation for this fall, an all in-house Top Rank clash between Pacquiao and Cotto looks increasingly certain for Nov. 14 in Las Vegas. Arum has apparently received the green light from Manny, and reports are now circulating the fight is heavily in the works.

Despite all you read, it still remains uncertain Cotto’s nasty cut suffered last Saturday in combat will be fully healed in time, but for now the wheels do look as though they are in motion. Pacquiao vs. Cotto at a catch weight below 147 looks like it will be boxing’s biggest fight this fall.

Dignity and pride. Two words that describe Miguel Cotto. You never hear him trash an opponent and you don't hear him make excuses. Miguel Cotto is and has been the consummate professional his entire career.

So why does it seem that Cotto is being treated as the red headed stepchild. His fights are entertaining and big draws in New York.

Now his promoter , Bob Arum , has pretty much sealed the deal for Cotto to fight boxing's number one draw , Manny Pacquiao. Is this a golden parachute gift for the years of service to Top Rank or is it a lamb being led to slaughter? Arum recently said that this was an even fight. Remember a couple of years ago when Floyd Mayweather versus Arturo Gatti was considered an even fight by some people. It just wasn't so.

And now Cotto is becoming the Puerto Rican Gatti. He boxes well and is highly intelligent , but he seems to be taking a beating in recent years. Gatti changed from slugger to boxer with good results until he ran into Mayweather. Cotto has become more of a boxer since moving up from junior welterweight. The results have been mixed. His fight with Shane Mosley could have been a draw and he couldn't seem to keep Margarito off of him last year , illegal wraps or not.

So why doesn't his promotional team step in and take control. Let him know that it would be more beneficial to become the aggressor in fights? Bob Arum hardly uttered a word in Miguel's defense after the Margarito debacle. However , you could find him with his lips firmly planted on Margarito's backside even when his fighter was caught red and illegally handed.

It could be because there have been rumblings that Cotto will not be back with Arum when his contract runs out at the end of the year. Cotto has taken the high road and refused to engage in a media war of words with his promoter. Cotto was lucky to escape with a win on Saturday night. The consenus has been that Miguel didn't win the fight as much as Joshua Clottey lost the fight. Can you imagine Pacquiao not throwing punches the way Clottey did in some rounds? Me neither. It is hard to think of Pacquiao not being active the whole three minutes of any round. So how is this an even fight?

Miguel Cotto has been a major plus for boxing and deserves the same in return. Here's hoping that Miguel can hold his own against Pacquiao and give the fans a memorable fight and move on to Golden Boy where they appear to know how to treat their fighters. Remember Manny was all set to sign with Oscar when Arum threatened legal action against Golden Boy Promotions. Maybe it's because a former boxer knows what other fighters go through and is willing to stand behind them through the tough fights. Here's hoping Miguel is able to go twelve rounds with Manny , win or lose , and have the last laugh on Bob Arum.
