Pacquiao Down Hatton

Pacquiao over Mayweather in fantasy fight

The fight may happen. Then again it may not. Freddie Roach said that Floyd Mayweather wants a 60 / 40 split his way. That will never happen. Roach said his man is the the reason tickets would be sold. Mayweather contends he is the reason tickets will be sold. Experts agree that Pacquiao is in fact the hottest commodity in boxing right now. Either way , Roach says everything is negotiable.

So lets jump to spring of 2010. Mayweather has beat Juan Manuel Marquez and Pacquiao has beat Miguel Cotto. These could be two highly competitive fights. But , for the sake of argument and my article , Mayweather and Pacquiao come out winners. How does the fight shape up? You have two extremely skilled boxers. Both are quick. We have the former and present pound for pound kings facing off. Different styles , different personas and very different trainers. What happens on fight night?

The closest thing Mayweather has faced to an opponent that resembles Pacquiao is a combination of Zab Judah and Jose Luis Castillo. A concoction of Erik Morales and Juan Manuel Marquez is what we need to create a suitable , if thats possible , Mayweather clone.

The counter punching of Marquez gave Pacman trouble. Manny was leary of jumping on Marquez and when he hesitated he lost the round. Morales did basically the same thing. Erik's philosophy was to take ten punches to land two punches.

Mayweather had trouble with Judah. At least for the first four rounds. Judah used his speed to give Mayweather angles. It was effective until Judah had his usual meltdown. His loss of focus turned a good fight into an easy Mayweather victory.

Many thought that Castillo beat Mayweather in their first fight. He did this with constant pressure. Mayweather likes to be on the ropes and look for openings as his opponent commits to his punches. Castillo took this advantage away by staying close and throwing an assortment of punches.

Roach said De La Hoya won every round against Mayweather when he used his jab. This kept the defensive minded Mayweather in an even more defensive posture. But Mayweather is smart and has a habit of figuring out opponents.

So what happens? Pacquiao's aura of invincibility shows in the first round. He starts strong and immediately attacks Mayweather. Mayweather grins , but you can tell he isn't comfortable. Mayweather's quickness allows him to roll with and away from some punches. Still , Mayweather cannot land any telling blows as Pacquiao's speed is amazing.

Round two also goes to Pacquiao. But , you can see Mayweather becoming a little more offensive minded.

The two split rounds three to six. Pacquiao raises his hands after the two exchange. He is in his element. Whenever there is a lull Mayweather grabs the opportunity to potshot his opponent.

Rounds seven through ten see more of the same. The difference is that Mayweather continues to head hunt while Pacquiao has focused on Mayweather's body. Pacquiao seems to be ahead six rounds to four. Some may even see him ahead seven to three.

Rounds eleven and twelve are usually Floyd's rounds , but the bodyshots have definitely taken their toll. Knowing he probably needs a knockout doesn't matter. Mayweather believes he is ahead and goes defensive again. Round twelve sees Mayweather back on the ropes. He appears hurt from the body attack. Manny attacks like a hungry lion and tries to stop his prey , but Mayweather survives the round.

Manny Pacquiao is announced as the clear cut winner. Manny says the jab and body punching were the key to his victory. The only one in disbelief is Floyd Mayweather. He sprouts off about boxing politics and Larry Merchant ends the interview by saying , "Floyd , you finally lost , get over it".

Roach wants Floyd for Manny next

It's no longer feasible this year, but Freddie Roach holds out hope that his prized ward, Manny Pacquiao, will get to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. in his next outing.

And the three-time Trainer of the Year predicts that the lucrative bout will happen early next year.

“I think we’re going to fight either (Miguel) Cotto or Shane Mosley, so either one is fine with me,” Roach told Percy Crawford of FightHype Monday. “But Mayweather is the one I want and hopefully, the Mayweather fight will happen by early next year.”

Roach and Pacquiao had originally looked at a Mayweather bout either on Oct. 17 or Nov. 14 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Mayweather, who was supposed to battle Juan Manuel Marquez on July 18, however, suffered a rib injury during training. The fight, set at a catch weight of 143 pounds, has since been moved to Sept. 19.

Thus far, Cotto, the WBO welterweight champ, appears to be Pacquiao’s most likely foe with only the catch weight (144 lb or 145 lb) and revenue sharing still to be resolved.

Because of the undefeated American’s edge in size and defense, Roach hesitated on a Pacquiao-Mayweather duel last year.

But Pacquiao’s successive demolition of Oscar De La Hoya at 147 lb and Ricky Hatton at 140 made Roach change his mind.

As to Cotto and Mosley, Roach feels that both are tough fights as they are bigger and stronger than Pacquiao. But he said the Filipino superstar stands a good chance as he works hardest against big guys.

Money may derail Floyd vs. Pacquiao

If Floyd Mayweather Jr. insists on getting the lion’s share of the money, Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum may opt for Miguel Cotto of Puerto Rico as the probable opponent of Filipino icon Manny Pacquiao.

"Mayweather is taking the position that unless he gets more money, there will never be a fight, that's absurd," Arum told the British press. "Manny is the most sought-after boxer on the planet. If Mayweather persists with this position, a fight will never happen."

Arum said Cotto, who also fights under the Top Rank banner like Pacquiao, appears to be a more viable
foe most especially if he wins against Ghanaian Joshua Clottey on Saturday night (Sunday morning in Manila) at Madison Square Garden in New York.

"If Cotto beats Clottey that's just as big a fight," said Arum, noting that Cotto has a tremendous following
among the Hispanics, making a match-up with Pacquiao as sure box-office hit.

Pacquiao gets to size Cotto up close and personal as the Filipino will be in the Big Apple for the 84th annual Boxing Writers Association of America (BWAA) awards on the eve of the fight.

Pacquiao trainer Freddie Roach said he prefers the brash Mayweather for Pacquiao over the other names being mentioned since he doesn't only commands big money but is the easiest
to defeat compared with Shane Mosley and Cotto.

Roach said Mayweather is "fragile and over-rated" and Pacquiao will surely cut him to ribbons.

Mayweather, however, has a big test to overcome on July 18: Juan Manuel Marquez of Mexico.
What if Marquez scores an upset?

"Then, we'll fight him (Marquez)?" said Roach, who plans to convince Pacquiao to wait until the third week of July before making a decision as to who to fight next.

Arum said he will be compelled to move the Oct. 17 fight to Nov. 14 if Pacquiao delays his decision to name his next opponent, something Roach is comfortable with, saying he doesn't mind waiting up to December as long as it is Mayweather.

Meanwhile, Pacquiao left for the US via Northwest Airlines Friday morning to grace the BWAA banquet at the Capitale. Pacquiao, wife Jinkee, Canadian adviser Mike Koncz and lawyer Franklin Gacal boarded the 8:10 a.m. flight to New York with a stopover in Tokyo.

Pacquiao had initially decided to skip the event but changed his mind on the urging of his advisers.

Pacquiao, who knocked out Ricky Hatton of England in his last fight on May 2, could be back in the country by Monday or Tuesday although the Los Angeles Dodgers have booked him to appear for a ceremonial pitch on Wednesday.

‘Pacquiao, Mosley to give Mayweather trouble’

The return of Floyd “Money” Mayweather, Jr. to the ring is just over a month away, when he is set to tackle Juan Manuel “Dinamita” Marquez on July 18 in the “Number One/Numero Uno” main event.

The megafight is expected to be a sellout at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas as well as on pay-per-view cable television.

But for Floyd Mayweather, Sr., the bout is just a “tune-up fight” for his son, he told John Martinez of IronBoxing.com.

“The Marquez fight is going to be nothing more than what you have seen before,” he added.

He even said that “It should be on regular HBO instead of PPV. There is a bad economy out there and we all know what is going to happen already.”

Floyd Sr. also told Martinez that he favors the possibility of his son fighting “Sugar” Shane Mosley and pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao.

“Now the Mosley or Pacquiao fight is a totally different story,” he commented. “Those fights are definitely PPV events.”

“Both fighters would give my son trouble. But in the end, Lil’ Floyd wins.”

He said that a Mayweather-Mosley match-up would be a “very good fight.”

“Shane fights all comers and gives it his all. This fight would go all 12 rounds with a lot of action in it,” he said.

He even volunteered to “become chief trainer for the Mosley fight” should it materialize.

For the meantime, the focus is on Mayweather’s comeback fight against Marquez.

Floyd Sr. even gave his prediction for the July 18 fight. “Well then if you can remember the Gatti fight, you’ve already seen the Marquez fight in advance. It is going to be the same thing all over again.”

Mayweather defeated Arturo Gatti in 2005 via technical knockout in the sixth round. The victory made “Pretty Boy Floyd” the WBC super lightweight champion.

Floyd Sr. continued, “Marquez is a Mexican. He doesn’t want to look bad. He is going to come forward and make the fight.”

Despite this strategy, he said that Marquez will still not be able to get the better of Mayweather.

“Mexicans always come to fight. But when he does, he is going to get clipped. He isn’t going to counterpunch. Trust me,” he remarked.

Marquez or Mayweather Jr. is Pacquiao’s only option

MANILA, Philippines – Manny Pacquiao only has one option to settle his pending issues with either Juan Manuel Marquez or Floyd Mayweather Jr. and that is to face each of them separately inside the ring.

Marquez has been aching for a rematch after losing by split decision against Pacquiao last year while Mayweather Jr. wants to reclaim his former pound-for-pound title that the Filipino boxing icon currently holds.

Mayweather Jr. came out of retirement to fight Marquez on July 18 and Pacquiao would closely watch the outcome of the match with the intention of facing the winner in his last bout before entering the political ring.

A host of big name fighters are also after Pacquiao.

With the likes of Sugar Shane Mosley, Miguel Cotto, Edwin Valero, Michael Katsidis, and recently the controversial Antonio Margarito want a piece of the reigning International Boxing Organization (IBO) welterweight champion.

But Pacquiao can’t and won’t fight all of them since he has already made it known that he is only good for one final bout.

He plans to retire afterwards to seek a congressional post in Saranggani, his wife’s home province, in the 2010 national elections.

Pacquiao is eyeing to return to the ring in October or November with his two-round demolition of Briton Ricky Hatton still fresh on the minds of boxing fans.

Before making his choice for his final fight, Pacquiao is said to be waiting for the results of the Cotto-Joshua Clottey match on June 13 and the Mayweather Jr. and Marquez bout on July 18 before making his choice for his final fight.

And if ever Mayweather gets past Marquez, a possible fight with Pacquiao might not push through because of money matters.

Mayweather has made it known that Pacquiao won’t get a 50-50 purse split adding that it is him who brings in the money to his blockbuster fights.

A Pacquiao-Mayweather bout would keep the cash registers ringing for both fighters and their promoters where fight fans, not only in Las Vegas, would scramble for tickets. The fight, if it happens, would rake in huge pay-per-view buys around the globe.

Pacquiao’s camp, particularly promoter Bob Arum and trainer Freddie Roach, previously stated that the Filipino ring icon deserves the lion’s share (60-40) in his next fights, being boxing’s top draw.

But Mayweather downplayed Pacquiao’s claim to a bigger pie saying that he had bigger PPV buys against two common rivals, Oscar De La Hoya and Ricky Hatton, where he raked in a combined 3.43 (million) PPV buys.

Pacquiao VS Mayweather Will Eventually Happen

Floyd Mayweather Jr has returned from his so called retirement and will face a dangerous foe in Juan Manuel Marquez. Many of the Pacquiao faithful are upset that the fight between Manny and Floyd didn't materialize first. Let's take a look at a few of the reasons as to why it didn't. It's in this writers opinion that Floyd Mayweather Jr coming off of his so called "retirement" has no desire to step right into the ring against a guy that just carved up Ricky Hatton in an eye blink. Oh yea, Manny if you haven't already heard destroyed Oscar De La Hoya before that. So should Manny wait around for Floyd Mayweather?

Freddie Roach told this writer a few times now that they don't have any plans on waiting around for Mayweather. It appears that very well may be the case with the recent rumors that "Sugar" Shane Mosley has emerged as the new front runner to step in against Pacman.

The second reason as to why I believe Mayweather decided on Marquez first is so that with a win over Marquez, he would then have more leverage to demand a 60/40 split when it does come down to a Pacquiao negotiation. A defeat over Marquez, the man that has given Pacquiao more trouble than any other fighter would certainly justify Mayweather asking for more money, but I am not sure it would justify asking for MORE money than Manny should get. Roach told 8CN on more than one occasion that they will NOT settle for anything less than the lions end of the share in a Pacquiao vs Mayweather bout.

If this fight is going to happen a few things will have to materalize. Firstly, the purse money issue. Mayweather is going to want a 60/40 split in his favor, unfortunately that's just simply not going to cut it in the eyes of team Pacquiao, and rightfully so. The other hurdle to jump over is the weight issue. Obviously they will have to fight at a catch-weight, it's just not decided yet as to who goes where.

So wouldn't it be interesting if Mayweather does go on to defeat Juan Manuel Marquez (which is no guarantee)? Wouldn't it be even more interesting if the Pacquiao vs Mosley fight does come to fruition, and Manny defeats Mosley? Now THAT would really set the juices flowing and everybody including the Yale chess team would be screaming PACQUIAO VS MAYWEATHER! Oh yea, let's not forget that Shane Mosley is a multiple division world champion that just systematically destroyed Antonio Margarito. Shane would certainly have a little something to say in this equation.

A Manny Pacquiao vs Shane Mosley fight has an awful lot of intrigue as well. I don't know about you, but I for one get a little sick of people outside of the sport of boxing that always preach about boxing being a dying sport. Mayweather vs Marquez, Pacquiao vs Mosley, Pacquiao vs Mayweather, Mosley vs Mayweather, shoot, I'll take any of those combinations.
